It’s hard to “like” this, but it needs to be written. Wellington seems miles ahead of Auckland wrt regeneration, but visit the Forest Bridge Trust site (https://www.theforestbridgetrust.org.nz/) for some amazing, positive conservation stories in the Auckland region.
Good question but I'm not sure of the answer. It does appear to be some kind of wound, but I don't know whether that is insect damage or caused by something else. Unfortunately, my fungus identification still needs work.

That looks, great, thanks. I will check it out when I have a chance!
In the image of a fungus growing on a tree trunk it appears to be growing out of a hole. Is the hole the exit hole of a pūriri moth?

You write science beautifully. Thank you. How could I resist today’s title!
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it.
