Those mosaics look almost three-dimensional. What happened to those skills? Did they die with the fall of Rome? The fall of Constantinople? Or did they just die out in the Middle Ages?
Incredible aren't they. Something certainly happened because the Romans fully understood how to make things very 3-dimensional at least 100 BC, that's very clear. It seems as if something happened with the shift in focus from Rome to Byzantium, because it was clear that by the 4th century AD/CE they didn't have a clue what perspective was looking at the Byzantine mosaics of the era.
