Very interesting, thanks Melanie. I sailed up the East Coast a few years ago and was horrified to see the hills slipping into the sea. It looked just like the moon, and the dominant vegetation was thistles judging by the down floating off to colonise new ground. Sad.

Thanks Alan. It's not an area I know, but you're right, it's so sad.

Chris Phillips has a breadth of experience and specialization and it shines in the interview. I glazed over with some of the erosion talk. What I know is you are a very good interviewer. Your reference to the Badlands reminds me of visiting Badlands National Park -- walking on the moon. I think reading your Substack is quite an education in New Zealand!

Thanks Mark. I was so lucky to get the interview with Chris. Apparently he had a lot of requests but most people were more after a soundbite and I was looking for a broader picture of the situation.

I saw photos of Badlands National Park and was struck by how much it resembled Utah. I just love desert/ eroded landscapes. There's something about them that say "this is not for you" to humans and I admire that.

Excellent interview, you really put the erosion issue in New Zealand into context and explored the root (sorry, I know, I know!) causes. It's such a dynamic, changing situation and it's interesting to hear and learn about humans' and the environment's responses to each other so far.

Thanks Stephanie. We're still struggling with understanding the situation here, a lot of people are still in the mentality of bandaid fixes.
