This was really good, Melanie - I agree that the comment on your post a few weeks ago confused me about everyone not being equally affected by global warming. Your explanation was extremely clear and helped me understand. This global warming thing is, like most everything, not a straightforward phenomenon. I really appreciate your explanation here.
Thank you. I had separately heard about Scandinavia rising and the ocean being uneven, but I hadn't put it together and realised how complex sea level rise is going to be. Even though it's all bad news, it still made my day learning all of this.
Also Melanie New Zealand lies at the edge of both the Australian and Pacific tectonic plates. To the northeast of New Zealand, and underneath North Island, the Pacific Plate is moving towards, and being subducted below the Australian Plate. This means that the East coast of Nz is sinking by about 3mmm per year by subduction and 3mm by ocean warming. There has been a scientific joint study with govt orgsnisations and university research called NZ searise where they have mapped the entire coastline to predict effective sea level rise out to 2300 has interactive maps https://www.searise.nz/
I launched in a foundation a project about sustainability: the blue marble project.
It is aimed at creating a community dedicated to sustainability to help people to create a more sustainable lifestyle and help small companies to develop a sustainable way of doing business. It leverages blockchain technologies to decentralize the decision making regarding which project to work on.
In the blue marble project, you can:
- ask questions
- answer to the questions of others
- contribute to sustainability project
It would be a pleasure and an honor to have you onboard.
For information, among the projects we are working on the definition of a method of evaluation of the sustainability of building material that could be understood by everyone. This project is done in collaboration with Beal a Certification body from New Zealand.
Great piece Melanie. I had no idea about the sinking cities problem. Thankyou.
Thanks. I didn't know about it either until I heard about it on BBC Science in Action, last week.
Mind blown about the sea not being a uniform level! Thanks for your research and writing efforts.
Thank you. Yes, it's so counterintuitive, took me some time to get my head around it.
You just blew my mind so many times that I lost count! Such an interesting and informative article!
Thank you. This one really surprised me, I have to admit

This is a good summary, thanks! And it ties in well with my recent article: https://thewaterdroplet.substack.com/p/what-is-land-subsidence
Steve
Thank you. I was really interested to read about land subsidence due to taking water from aquifers. I never realised that it was a problem.

Melanie, this article is really wonderful. Clear and well documented. It is useful to explain this complex subject and have it understood.
I am sure that this article will interest my readers
I released an article on how to answer to our children when they will ask why we didn’t act when it was still time? I would love your feedback.
