There are some big lists of flagged-up predatory journals (eg. https://www.openacessjournal.com/blog/predatory-journals-list/) and I'll make cross-referencing them part of my fact-checking process.
I find the whole issue quite intimidating as like you I look at a lot of scientific papers on diverse topics. I'm sure I've made a few mistakes. But I found that learning more about it has made me more confident that mostly I'm using good sources.
