Wow - that article about the three people still living with Iron Lungs was eye-opening. They've lived long and even productive lives, but it made me so grateful to live in a world where the polio vaccine exists. I'm assuming polio vaccines are given when we are very young children? I have no memory of getting the vaccine myself, but it must be one of the ones required for schooling here in the U.S. so I must have it. This was a powerful issue!

Such a remarkable story, isn't it. It's a reminder of the last effects, also that people can seem to make a decent recovery but then can deteriorate again with post-polio syndrome. I actually heard from a polio survivor in response from my article, reminding me of that point. Most people have the polio vaccine when very young fortunately
