I love the way you show the complexity of ecosystems. There's always some charismatic (Orcas) or economically valuable (salmon) species we've trying to save. We tell ourselves if we just fix this small piece of habitat, it's OK to keep on trashing the rest, and then wonder why it's not working. We have to think much bigger than that. I grew disenchanted with participating in the idea that we could grant-fund our way to "enough" habitat while maintaining business as usual. So now I write about it. Many of my former colleagues from the grant-fund world follow me!

It's a really important point about the compartmentalisation. I didn't understand the extent to which I'd subscribed to it until I started trying to understand the Māori perspective better, then things began to make more sense.

Similar here with the Native American perspective. It's hard to get people to even consider letting go of business as usual.

I go to Kaeo in Northland alot ..and apparently those fresh water mussels were / are🤞found in the Kaeo River !
